It has been quite a while since I wrote something on this blog. It is taking me quite an effort to clean up my rusted work skills, and I find that I am spending a lot of time to re-familiarize myself with the demands of “normal” work which does require certain skills. The shift from politics back to academia is not proving to be smooth. The striking thing I notice is that the frame of mind has to be totally re-aligned to be extremely objective whereas when in politics, the order of the day is somewhat normative. After a marathon 14 hour day, a just find myself too exhausted to start writing again in a completely different frame of mind. Mind you, age is also catching up, I must admit.
Nevertheless, events in the Majlis today, has sent me into shock. That the People’s representatives sitting in the supreme institution of the nation could blatantly break the very laws that they swore to uphold, and do it on public television sent my mind reeling. Battery, assault, call it what you will, is against the law at any place, any time.
But it did not surprise me really. The shock was that it happened in the Majlis. This has been building up for some time now, and it could only culminate in …..
The burning question is, what next? Where are we headed? The social system is disintegrating rapidly, the nation in a whirlpool, the economy at a dead halt, small businesses are closing down, people are losing their jobs, Ramazan is around the corner, food prices are predicted to climb….and the highest institution in the nation is fighting with ghosts…from the past. Some are fearful that some ghosts from the past will haunt them for the rest of their lives, and others are shaking with trepidation that some ghosts just refuse to die and live in ghostdom, and might eat them alive. In between, I am struggling to make ends meet so that my wife and children will not go hungry.
Sad thing is, we all know that nothing will come out of this hullabaloo. The Government knows very well that none from the past regime can ever be tried in a court (that is any of the big shots who committed the crimes) because members of the past regime has enough ammunition in their pockets to keep the Government out of the courts. Yet, there is a burning need for the Government to appease the bloodhounds which stick by them.
I wish the President would concentrate on governing well, the Majlis would stop wasting our money and make some good laws and the Judges would concentrate on delivering Justice.
As I lie in bed tonight, I will be wondering as to what kind of deals are being made behind the fiery smokescreen, in the backrooms of the MDRPA Alliance office.
ibra: you are just nobody!
ReplyDeleteYes... One wonders why we spent all that time and energy on a new DEMOCRATIC constitution when the parties who claim to be the catalyst for this democracy just ignore the constitution and rewrite the rules to suit them...
ReplyDeleteAnd we, the public, have to sit, powerless as they, the Majlis, grapple with ghosts and egos that are too big for this universe...
well said Ibra,
ReplyDeleteCan the president or somebody dismiss the parliament? like they did in japan the other day?
ReplyDeleteHey Mr. Ibra, we had enough of you. You failed in enough elections that its time for u to just shut up ur mouth about politcs in Maldives. You were so impatient as a MDP president and resigned, so MDP will not listen to you. U thought u and your party was so popular, but you the votes you got is enough to know how much ppl accpet you.
ReplyDeleteDont go on thinking ppl r stupid and claiming that no one other than you in nation knows the rule of law.You think you so a creidble person to run a nation, now you have a test, Prove it with a just minimun 70% pass in O level of students in your school. If you cant do it how can you run a nation. For thoses who think Ibra is our future. Belive me he is our past in politics, not future.

ReplyDeleteLooks like you have something personal going agaisnt Ibra. Calm down. Have some respect. Thats something serious lacking within us nowadays. Ibra may not be a politician now. But his name will be written as one of the iconic figures in Maldivian political history.
I kind of lol'd when I saw the fight. I then proceeded to acquire a video of said event, for posterity's sake.
ReplyDeleteAll in all, it just shows that I was right when I said that most of those running for parliament this time around were of inferior background, weak education, proper morals and the needed briefings - I'm mortified that things I say off-hand are turning out right after all.

ReplyDeleteMDRPA??? This means, no hope for justice. In fact, what I think should be a priority is cleaning up the streets from gangsters. Ibra, I am curious to know your take on these gangs, actually. Please tell me, do you think it is true, as has been claimed, that some Politicians use these gangs? Is that something which can possibly be stopped? It is kind of off the topic, I am sorry for that, but it seems that it should be a higher priority than some of the stuff talked about on some of tese blogs. Gangsterism is a big problem.
ReplyDeleteWell Ibra, we live in an ecosystem where everything is connected. The government needs to address the issues thats preventing them from effectively running the country.
ReplyDeleteAnd on your MDRPA comment, I have to say its offensive. Being dissatisfied with your loss is one thing.
Believe it or not, there are several other people who have worked tirelessly to bring democracy to this country.
@ The Shadowrunner :
ReplyDeleteRegarding the gangs. I do have reason to believe that there are links between gang activity and political climate.
@historyintime : I believe that all the hullabaloo created by the government IS the reason they are finding difficult to run the country. They should focus on governing.
If you find my concept of MDRPA offensive....well...don't be offended. This is not the first time I used the term (look at previous blog posts). I coined the term BEFORE the PRESIDENTIAL elections. It is ironical you use the pseudonym "historyintime". You are forgetting very very recent history. The alliance created after the constitution was ratified...MDP, DRP and PA joined hands in parliament to railroad the elections commission, the supreme court and the presidential elections. The MDP, DRP and PA joined hands in the Parliamentary elections to ensure that they were the only parties with a voice in the country. You guys got sucked in, my friend...and now you are having to defend the indefensible. Tough cheese.
My blogposts now do not concern elections. I am simply exercising my right to express myself, in the capacity of a Maldivian Citizen. If you can't stomach it...tough cheese agin. I just expressed a simple wish (I believe is a growing wish among Maldivians)...that is, just asking MY President to concentrate on governing well, asking MY representative in Parliament (and other MPs) to focus on making good laws, and asking MY Judges to focus on delivering Justice. If you find that offensive, well....what more can I say? If that is offensive in 'Aneh Dhivehiraajje', I would prefer "Ehen Dhivehiraaje eh".
Ibra, you have a point, for some reason, Maumoon helped give Anni the title President. I strongly suspect...it is clear, why well...as odd as it seems I have my theories...to discredit Annie Nasheed, to give him the chance to prove the reform movement looks like a useless bunch of losers...in eyes of the public (which sadly seems to be happening for many) etc etc Pressure from top business men who wanted stability, to demonstrate to world he is democratic but ultimately proving Maumoon's rule was best overall. But consequentially, Nasheed has no real power, as power, real power, is never given, it is always taken...
ReplyDeleteAbdul-Rahman
That is in reference to your MDRPA comment and your assertion that previous regime have enough power to stay out of court, you said ammunition but what I meant is same thing...President Nasheed has not got any real power over DRPA, they still have power over him...This is painfully obvious...
ReplyDeleteTruth is, at onetime, I myelf loved Maumoon, but when I turned against Maumoon was when it came to light that he had and continued to give power to ppl who control gangs knowing fully well they did so...It, hurt me...because at one point we were threatened by gangsters and still feel threatened by them...I learnt Maumoon did not really care, but to this day never seen a man who could on such a convincing face of caring...
Abdul-Rahman
Meant to email you Ibra will do shortly...
ReplyDeleteAbdul-Rahman
Why don't you realise that the Maldivian people don't want you to serve any public office, let alone be president.
ReplyDeleteI just can't understand people like you and Umar Naseer when the people say NO give it a rest, lie low for atleast a few years.
Or perhaps it's the nature of these creatures?
@Al-Amevian :
ReplyDeleteI have realized that quite well, and I am NOT in public office. But you see, there are somethings even the Maldivian People, let alone those in power, cannot take away from me : my citizenship and my inalienable right to express myself about issues concerning me and my nation, my beliefs, my perseverance, and my love for my fellow humans.
You and I probably cannot agree on anything. Just look at the logic of the comment you made. You are asserting I should remain silent and give up my rights as a citizen because I lost public office....and you are doing it on my personal blog....how much more obtuse can you be? You know, I bet the next time you see me on the road, you will most probably express regret at my not being elected, and how you admire this and that about me...that is what the nature of my fellow citizens is.
You should realize this. It is not Maumoon or Anni or Yaameen or any other politician who is destroying this country. It is people like you who do not have the guts to stand up for what you believe, are two-faced and so selfish you don't even know when the next best thing to sliced bread hits you right on the face. You see, ultimately, the values espoused by those who hold public office is a clear reflection of the values of those who elect and support them.
Al-Amevian. Take a moment to yourself and think about this : When was the last time you saw anything positive in life (other than in a narcissistic sense, that is) or gave a thought to your next door neighbour?
Hate, Jealousy, Envy are negative emotions. It doesn't do you good, my friend.
My word Ibra that was the most hard hitting, brilliant truth I read for a while. Ibra, I just wrote something I thought was hard hitting but reading that was like being punched in the guts by a dose of truth too hard to handle. It is dangerous to speak the truth in the Maldives, Ibra, you are a hot blooded danger man again like when you were the herooic old Ibra, pummelling the Parliament speaking out against torture!!!
ReplyDeleteEven though you speak very softly, the impact of your speech, because it is the truth the rare damn truth no one hears these days, hits you as though you were roaring through the worlds loudest speakers!
I greatly admire both yourself and His Excellency and the majority of the MDP, and like many I am sad that you had your differences but then that's the way it went.
You will always be one of the Fathers of reform, Ibra, and genuine people will always respect you as such.
Thanks, I just wanted to say, a big THANKS SO MUCH for everything you've done. THANKS ALOT...
Ibra, I know you don't know who I am, I am in truth, a shy guy who thinks alot and I really don't want to be known I am happy to express my thoughts anonomysously as I am really timid in person and could never face the day if people that read this stuff knew who I was.
But I hope you believe, please tell me you believe I am not just blowing hot air up you, I mean what I say and I hope I wish their was someway I could let you believe that.
I have said all sorts of crazy whacky crap which I did not mean and that I regret saying, I have betrayed my own dignity for favours but I have always paid a painful price for it so I believe I have been forgiven for everytime I have been a hypocrite but my respect for you is the real thing, Ibra...Genuine respect...
Abdul-Rahman
Ibra,
ReplyDeleteTalking about mourning, I was mourning when I read about a13 year old boy being stabbed.
After a 13 year old boy was stabbed i am desparate for answers on how to destroy gangsterism. Please suggest a way to end this thing, your knowledge is supreme I trust you will have some useful needed ideas. My feeling is, if the stabbing of a 13 year old does not cause one to feel enough grief and anger to be moved to act against gangsterism, that person who does not act is less than a human. Action includes ideas, in what I am referring to. When I learnt of this, I nearly vomitted with depsair, rage, helplessness, frustration.
Again, please suggest an idea on how to end this thing...
Abdul-Rahman
@Ibra
ReplyDeleteNo surprise there, thats precisely the kind of knee-jerk and hasty response I anticipated.
It's evident how much of a politician and above all a "caring and loving for your fellow humans" you are.
Your failure to understand my statement
as facts and not merely an assertion, begs to question the rationality of your thinking.
You fail to amuse me Ibra, You claim about "love for your fellow humans" and then go onto lament your fellow humans' "reflection and their values".
Indeed Ibra,Hate, Jealousy, Envy are negative emotions. It doesn't do you good,
Don't hope too much to see this narcissist not loving his neighbour on the road. As for admiring you, take a wild guess?.
BTW, is this Rahuman guy some kind of a sidekick of yours? please enlighten us.
Ibra does not know who I am, least I think he doesn't, I think I annoy hell out of him by being over patronizing at times, in fact.
ReplyDeleteI just respect all the reformists because, I also was psychologically tortured by ex-regime - well, by one particular which I won't mention, and to me all those that had the guts to stand up to the ex-regime are heroes for their courage, includes, Ibra, Anni, Amin Feisal and others, etc...
As such, I think Ibra deserves respect
But as for being Ibra's sidekick, heck, Ibra doesn't know who I am and by my rantings I suspect he would prefer it that way,,hehe
But Ibra, sorry for being a pest, but I would love an opinion by you on the gang issue, I rant a lot of crazy stuff but this issue is serious... so what are your thoughts?
Abdul-Rahman
@Al-Amevian : Wake up, my friend. I am not a politician anymore. And with that, I am enjoying my newfound freedom in being able to call a spade a spade and not having to give a second thought on political consequences.
ReplyDeleteYes "...You see, ultimately, the values espoused by those who hold public office is a clear reflection of the values of those who elect and support them..." Is there a lamentation within? I have not included any value judgement in the statement.
But your reaction to that statement establishes:
1. You are one of those who helped to elect at least some of those in elected positions right now,
2. You can see, and you do acknowledge that the values espoused by those in elected positions are lamentable (you said it, I did not)
3. You are despairing over it.
It is a good start, Al Amevian. Realization of foolhardiness is the first step to mend your ways. Now, instead of directing your frustrations at me, go and do something about it.
The likes of you survive because the likes of me do not take the effort to expose you for your shallowness.
btw, if Abdul Rahman is my sidekick, whose side are YOU kicking?
@Abdul Rahman :
I have been quite "out of the picture" of late, and am working very long hours. Hence I did not know about this stabbing incident until I read your comment.
There is only one solution I can think of to address this kind of gangsterism. That is, deploy enough state resources to catch these people, and put them away for a long, long time.
For the younger kids who are getting into this, one solution I can think of right now
is : boot camp to get rid of their excess energy and to get their anger back in control.
@Ibra
ReplyDeleteYou certainly enjoy this "ping pong" but honestly speaking I can't be bothered and its not worth the time.
Enjoy your new found freedom, but at the same time let others enjoy it too and cease the rattle a bit.
have a good one, and learn to chill out every once in a while. Trust me on this one, it's not that bad at the end of the day.
Ibra, once you replied to a comment, and you were saying 'hatred and jealousy doesn't do you any good...' I can't remember who you were talking too, but it would mean a great deal to me if you could please expand on these difficult yet important sentiments.
