[any of a group of primarily arboreal (tree-dwelling) Old World lizards best known for their ability to change body colour. It was never just Maumoon. It was always Them against Us. The Franchised against the Disenfranchised. The Oppressors against the Oppressed. They used every which avenue they could to maintain the status quo.
In the early years of the Qayyoom era, there were three main camps of power brokers: his own family, his in-laws and his Egyptian friends. The early years were smooth for him, as all three camps were collaborating to consolidate power within the ranks, and create a closure for all others. This of course meant that slowly, but steadily the resources in the country and national assets were increasingly controlled by these few people. Along with this, a rapid deterioration of the rule of law was carefully engineered. The net result was the establishment of a system where all opportunities in the country were carefully controlled by these people, and these opportunities were dispensed by patronage.
This paved the way for the creation of a class of people, recruited on the basis of loyalty to the regime, to control key government posts and the business sector. Government officials were given a free hand to dig into the public purse and “create wealth” for themselves and loyalists in the business sector were provided exclusive opportunities, sometimes by restricting the business environment for competitors.
In all of this, for Qayyoom to maintain control for himself, he had to engage in the old Arabic system of divide and rule, and juggle a balancing act between the factions. This resulted in extreme rivalry within the factions, and empire building by the factions. At first, each faction had to demonstrate that they were the key for Qayyoom to hold on to power. Ultimately this has led to the demise of the regime from within the ranks.
With the advancement of the opposition and the gradual weakening of the regime, all these people, the factions, the opportunistic officials and the opportunistic business community initially tried to take power. When they realized that they might go down with the regime, they have now split up and are seemingly jockeying for power now. Suddenly, they all want to protect the “public interest” so badly they can’t even get a good night’s sleep now. But, it is only a matter of time before they realize none of them can make it without Qayyoom. Yameen has realized that now, and he has made his peace with Qayyoom and the DRP.
Time will tell how soon all these “boys” will fuse together in a last bid attempt to salvage what they can, and then it will be Them against Us again, which is what it has always been. The flirting will be over soon. The boys and girls will join hands again.
The ideal running mate for Qasim will be Yameen, won’t it? I can almost see this scene where Ilyas and Hameed are holding up Qayyoom by each armpit, with Qasim and Yameen hand in hand leading the parade with shouts of long live the Zaeem!
Hehe. Exactly what i see as well.
ReplyDeleteDear Ibra,
ReplyDeleteI was very happy to hear that you have ruled out joining the Gasim coalition. I believe its time for Ibra, Anni and Hassan Saeed to come to some sort of understanding. Its not a coincidence only these 3 reformers are left today. These are the only 3 people who makes sense. The only 3 people who understands what democracy is. If you 3 join hands, I am sure you can prevent Gayoom or Gasim from coming to power. Please save us from the evil! I plead to you guys, please put behind any differences you have and come to a common platform to save the nation. Dont be selfish! Dont be betrayers! Save us!
Ibra you have said what exactly is going to happen,I had this feeling from the beginning of the reform process. Maumoon has made his point to endherimaage family, Kaamineege family and his bunch of azhar colleagues that without him they are nothing.
ReplyDeleteAs people get more exposed to freedom they now know that they all are in mercy of maumoon. As you have said it wont take much time that these three forces come out united to back maumoon. Once this happens the little freedom that public are experiencing will be at stake and once they get the power everything will start to reverse back.
Ibra in order to stop this force don't you think this is the right time for all of you whom maumoon call others get united and show your loyalty to citizens of maldives and expose the plan of maumoon rather than individually attacking maumoon.
I find most of presidential candidate stubborn to accept the good of each other. All are giving the same message but each of you is trying to find easy way out blaming the policies or just saying that the other is sold to whoever.
For once did any of you presented your ideas in power point presentation physically explaining and showing advantages and disadvantages of implementing each others policies giving public naked view of what these policies are and how it is going to effect their life so that they could understand the power the vote they put in the ballot.
I don't think people read all of your policies and stuff they also tend to find easy way out. why don't you show in cartoons or pictures how implementing your policies have an advantage over others. I think it would be more meaningful. I support your ideas but I don't agree with the way you present it.
Ibra, thats very true indeed. It has always been THEM and US. Its not only Qayyoom. One should wait and see what Qasim is upto. I would not be surprised to see Qasim and his cronies gang up with Yameen and Qayyoom. When it comes to defending the regime THEY have always shown unity. You are absolutely right in there. Qayyoom's played his last card now by showing to the deprived and helpless public the wealth and might of Qasim and his opportunist cronies. But, the public would not look at the picture in the way Qayyoom wants us to see it.Public see things from a totally difrerent perspective. We don't want to see the republic as 'Villa' inc. Ibra, I believe it is a duty of you and MDP to have a coalition at this moment. We need you two to join hands and throw the scary dragon (Qasim) into fire and never let him emerge again. Save this nation from the hands of these dangereous vampires.
ReplyDeleteAhmed:
ReplyDeleteSometims in the political field, you have to allow time for certain things to develop and take root. Situations need to be carefully assessed and projections made before decisions are taken. Impulsive actions can often be detrimental. We have all sacrificed much, spent a lot of energy, invested a lot of time, and we can't afford to make a single mistake at this crucial stage. You have to carefully determine potential pitfalls at every stage.
When you are fighting with chamaeleontidae, you yourself have to engage in degrees of subterfuge, don't you think?
'The king is dead... long live the king'?
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that more people do not seem to think, or even see, along those lines... As a nation we've got too much of a 'Gold Fish' memory I guess...
By the way - You're SPOT ON with this post.

ReplyDeleteI have never stated that anyone is "sold". I have been accused of same by many. Time will tell who is/was "sold" or not.
Dear Ibra
ReplyDeleteFrom all these reformist I think you are the onlyone who has the ability and courage to say what you exactly see how the The Maldivian Politics is. And I think you are the only one who could Salvage this country from these Cronies. Hope that you'll Make it "insha Allah"
Dear Ibra,
ReplyDeleteI am a student studying in Malaysia. I support most of your policies and ideology. I like to see SLP growing in numbers because SLP is the only party I have seen which is based on sound principles and is a party which doesn’t have a hidden agenda to promote some influential people in the party or their loved ones or cronies.
Ibra I have heard that you did well in TVM siyaasathu program. I have seen Dr. Hassan Saeed's Siyaasathu program in Utube. But I can not see your Siyaasathu program in Utube.
I hope you will arrange some person to put Siyaasathu program episode on which you appeared in Utube, so that people like us can see your program and decide which one to vote when I go to Vote to Maldives in this presidential election.
I hope you will put more of your campaign speeches and others in Utube.
Ahmed Sidey
Chamaeleontidae! Very precise and accurate description – may be of on one particular person.
ReplyDeleteDoes any one believe that Peoples Alliance is genuine? Surely not. Many factions or parties are being 'shown' to the unassuming public. The trick is to blurr and hide the real enemy in the appearance of a political faction.
In guerilla warfare, fighters integrate with the public to hide themselves. They are everywhere in broad daylight but very difficult to identify as one target. This is exactly what is happening – the real enemy is blending and camouflaging with the public.
Dear Ibra,
ReplyDeleteMany times we have heard many rumours about you. It is very common for us to hear rumours about the people who have voiced out against government.
One of these rumours is that, Ibra is backed by ‘Endherimaage’ family. Very often we hear Ibra is Ilyas Ibrahim’s boy or Qasim Ibrahim’s boy. Or that Ibra is funded by Endherimaage’ boys consist of Ilyaas Ibrahim or Qasim Ibrahim. Lot of stories in this regard is presented in the web sites that belong or is backed by Abdullah Yameen’s faction.
My question to you is that, is there any one’s or any organisation’s string attached to you politically or in any other way and what you do you say about the claims of Yameen’s faction that you are a boy of Endherimaage faction?
Thanks
Bass
It is surprise for to see that you have not answered my question about SLP membership numbers. I know I have not answered personal question about you or a question about your policy. But I was hoping that you will answer my question as a leader and presidential candidate of SLP.
ReplyDeleteAhmed sidey:
ReplyDeleteGood point. I have requested for a copy of the Siyaasath programme and am waiting for it.
I will request the campaign team to put an extra effort to put recordings on the web. Thanks for the suggestion.
Bass:
ReplyDeleteYou are very right on this. It is not only Yameen's faction which spreads this story about me being an "Endherimaage boy". Many of my political opponents, including the Endherimaage team themselves do this, I think.
But all these stories are just rumours, and remain rumours. No one has been able to provide any substantial reason for thinking so.
Fact is, there is no one in the political arena who have taken a public stand against the Endherimaage team as I have. For God's sake, I convinced my wife ( an apolitical woman if there ever was one) to go and contest the G.Dh seat in the last election simply to try and get rid of Abbas from the Majlis! All this while I was under arrest.
Anyone who followed the Special Majlis would have clearly seen that there is no love lost between Abbas and I. What more can I do or say to kill these rumours?
Rasheed Ibrahim:
ReplyDeletePlease do understand this is my personal blog. Any such question you have regarding the Liberal Party will be answered by the Party Office or the Party Leader / Spokesperson.
PS. The Party's name is Social Liberal Party, short name is Liberal Party. "SLP" is a media concoction that we do not acknowledge.
Ramazan Mubarik, Ibra and your whole team! Good luck to you in the up coming elections!
ReplyDeletea good excercise for all aspiring canditates to project themselves in into the future and test themselves against some of the challenges..............It was never just Ibra. This resulted in extreme rivalry within the factions, and empire building by the factions. At first, each faction had to demonstrate that they were the key for Ibra to hold on to power. Ultimately this has led to the demise of the regime from within the ranks.

Ibra. I have heard you criticize Abbas Ibrahim many times. But I want you to clarify to me if you have a share or any link with One and Half Degree Maldives company that is partly owned by Endherimaage boys like Maumoon's son-in-law Nadheem. and the businesses partly owned before by Maumoon's son-in-law Shuaib. what is the link between bougainvillea and endherimaage? Why was Fareesha a shareholder of Turquoise?
ReplyDeleteHassan :
ReplyDeleteI have already answered these questions in detail in reponse to another comment on another post on this blog. Please check that for details.
Short answer is, I don't own any shares in any company nor have I ever owned any. The only business venture I engaged in was Mandhu Learning Centre (sole proprietorship), but I no longer own it (since 2003).
What my brother Fayaz does or did by way of business is not my concern.
If anyone is looking for a Presidential candidate who doesn't have any relatives or friends engaged in some sort of business activity, ...well, good luck and happy searching.

ReplyDeleteEven though I have published this comment this time, in future I intend to publish comments which have some constructive content in it or is asking a genuine question only.
There are plenty of websites which will publish this kind of writings.
If anyone wants to have a go at me, you can email via www.ibra2008.com. I can take it. But let's not subject visitors to this blog with it. I have noticed that the majority of visitors to this blog are serious thinkers who are genuinely concerned Maldivians who are seeking to change this nation for the better. Let us try and keep it that way.
Dear Ibra, you may very well be what we are looking for- what this country needs...
ReplyDeleteWe are investing high hopes in your presidential campaign, ie those of us who are currently not in a position to openly contribute, financially or otherwise.
I am curious to know what you mean by this "a rapid deterioration of the rule of law was carefully engineered".
Could you elaborate further? Do you have prove to further this claim?
Ramzan Mubarik Btw
Ibra,
ReplyDeleteI see that your brothers helping you out in the election. Specially the ones associated with Gayyoom's two son-in-laws. How many resorts do they have now? I hope this is a personal question appropriate for your blog standard.
ibra, what kind of positive change can u really bring if u get elected? I mean ecnomically, because thats all what really matters. thanks
ReplyDeleteDear Ibra,
ReplyDeleteIs there even a remote possibility that the remaining factions( set aside, Villa, ADK,YT, endherimaage and DRP factions)can come to an understanding before the Election and agree on a joint candidate or some kinda of a compromise? I see no other way, its either DRP or villa now, both ways not beneficial to US Maldivians in anyway! I know that as u have said these things need to be sorted out with proper planning and understanding of the situation, but even a remote possibility seems to be a good sign for us Maldivians who are away from the country at the moment!
Anonymous (on my brothers):
ReplyDeleteYes some of my brothers are helping me out. Some other family members are not involved at all. In our family, each one has his/her own views on politics and the level of involvement they want. But I am happy to say that all of them, without exception, would like to see things change for the better in the Maldives. In that sense they are all patriots.
Again, I rally don't know details of my brothers' business interests. Even if I did, it is not my place to discuss details of it on my blog.
The constitution now gives you the right to demand such information from the relevant authorities.
I really do not have the time to respond to these irrelevant questions, especially asked under anonymity. Transparency goes both ways you know.
Anonymouses (rule of law and economy):
ReplyDelete"deteriroration of rule of law". If you looked at how the Qayyoom regime has weakened the judiciary, and the amount of interference which went on in various trials, the weakened majlis (six sessions a year!) with no legal; framework being developed for emerging social issues, particularly on the business side, no opportunities for people to get trained in the legal field and so on, you can see how rule of law was discarded by the regime. In the absenece of laws and a proper legal environment, everything was done on an ad hoc, arbitrary basis, throwing away just actions by government, all of which was necessary to practice patronage.
"economy" I agree this is most important, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that the economy was the ONLY issue at hand.I will be launching my economic policy soon where I will present the details. But generally, better distribution of wealth, removing unnecessary barriers to enterprise and entrepreneurs, making room for fair competition, abolish import duties in general, streamlining banking with a focus to helping small and medium businesses, diversifying the investment portfolio are going to be key points on my economic agenda.
thanks for not joining qasim. hope you and the few left would have a another movement to save the country and its assets from the greedy tycoons.
ReplyDeletefishy coment- some are saying that the low catch throught out the country is due to usage of nets by foreing vessels (with government permision). could you explore the allegations. i hope you would address the issue in the Majlis and in your economic policy as well.
“Economy”
ReplyDeleteAlthough Economy is not the ONLY issue, IT IS STILL THE MAIN ISSUE! Its like a middle east oil nation saying…well we don’t have detail plans to develop oil, and we don’t know how we can double our peoples income from oil.
The success of any of your policies and issues depend solely on a very successful ECONOMY. Tourism is the key economic star at this moment in our nation. And I need to know how you plan to make a difference without upsetting the cartels that seem to control the expansion of tourism. As you know all the recent resort expansions have been deliberately designed to be unsuccessful, and as a result majority of the new resort development projects have never materialised. All this helped the old cartels and existing owners to maintaining their high room rates and high occupancy. Isn’t it hilarious to see so many virgin islands idle with no productivity and no income? Managing our resources productively is the key to our success. No matter which candidate wins, you still need resources to build a nation that has been neglected for so long. Words are just not enough to build a nation.
We need you to tell us your plans in detail?
Anonymous (on economy):
ReplyDeleteEach is entitled to his/her view. I respect your view, but do not necessarily agree with ALL of it.
I believe that the vitality of the economy is not only dependent on revenue generation, but also on wealth distribution and greater circulation. Therefore a wholistic approach to economic issues have to be adopted. Those who have invested heavily and taken risks deserve the benefit of their vntures, at the same time the stake in national resources by each citizen also has to be considered.
It is difficult to go into detail on this blog, but if you are genuinely interested on my views and plans for the economy, please follow the following link : http://www.ibra2008.com/?page=issues/economy
Further details will be revealed when I launch my policy on the economy.
Ibra, I do not want you to join anyone - for the simple reason that if Anni comes to power we need a genuine reformist to be the opposition; if u come to power we need Anni to be in the opposition. A true democracy is not just when someone who had democratic credentials is in power. I believe a democratic polity will not be complete UNLESS someone with real democratic credentials is in the opposition too. And I believe that you and Anni (or rather your parties) are the only democratic parties in the Maldives.
ReplyDeleteI have deliberately ignored Dr. Hassan here because he does not belong to a party and I believe in multi-party democracy!
Good luck for the forthcoming elections
This is not related to the topic but since there is no way in putting the people's idea in your campaign web site. I thought of giving this suggestion on your blog. Sorry... if you mind.
ReplyDeletewhen you make the policy on energy, I would like to suggest the idea of floating wind-turbines turbine(http://www.economist.com/science/tq/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11482484).
I think it will me more productive and earth friendly and we will be more independent rather than depending on the unpredictable gulf countries for oil. I think you should promote this idea to fight against Qasim and mauoons oil exploration which is my concern on our reefs and ocean's environment.
ibra,
ReplyDeletemaybe u have easy road..after tonigts Q&A on TVM, all will know you are different..
still dont you work in a senior post of the failed goverment before like most of them??
Siyaaee faithful:
ReplyDeleteYes, I was a government employee from 1983 - 2003. However, I tried as much as I could to bring a positive change in my area of work which was in education. I couldn't. So when my bond was over, I made one last attempt to do something and when I couldn't I quit and joined the political arena to work to change the government.
Maldivian Devil:
ReplyDeleteAt last a soul mate!
Did you accept a cheque from Qasim to prevent MDP's gung ho behaviour?
ReplyDelete
