Aftermath

The first round of elections is over. I must say, that after a hectic campaign period, with huge levels of sustained stress, it is almost a welcome relief. But not quite. It is not over yet. The real test comes next. The second round.

It was not an easy decision for me to announce my candidacy in the first place. I always knew what I would eventually come up against. My campaign was not just an anti-Maumoon campaign. It was really an anti-establishment campaign. This was reflected very much in the lack of campaign support from the “big boys” to my campaign. In addition, the level of anti-campaigning that was going on against me behind the shadows was something I found very difficult to combat while trying to hold “opposition unity”.

The calls for me to give up my candidacy and join forces with Anni or Hassan was the next challenge. The constant questioning of my position against a single opposition candidate was also difficult to deal with. But I believe that the results have established once and for all that had we done that, the game would have been over by now. By having multiple candidates, we were able to pressure Qayyoom from all directions and we have been able to quantify Qayyoom to 40% from the claimed 90%. Furthermore, it prevented the DRP from honing in on any one candidate in their attack. Next, the opposition was able to get valuable airtime on public broadcast media to be used against the regime. I will still maintain that had I withdrawn my candidacy, Anni would have lost the case against his candidacy in the Supreme Court.

I was always convinced that there would be a second round, and that is when the Alliance would be properly activated. The second round is here. There are two candidates, and one is anti-Qayyoom. The multi-party election has ultimately been reduced to a yes or no referendum regarding Qayyoom’s candidacy. I don’t believe that issues are important at this stage. There is a single objective now. Dislodge the autocracy once and for all. Whatever other issues there may be have to be parked, and resolved later.

As for my candidacy, what did it achieve? Many may say not much. But I say a lot. Firstly, I was able to propose what I believed to the people and see how many Maldivians believed what I believe. The result? There are all of 1382 Maldivians who believe in the rule of law, in pre-school education, a proper education system, in an anti-trust law and a restructuring of the economy. I say this because I was the only candidate who proposed these things. Take away from my total votes my family, my wife’s family, campaign team, my close friends and how many more does that leave? Not much, I suppose. Anyway, it has finally been confirmed that in spite of all the praise I have been getting for “all the good work that Ibra has done for the people” and all the admiration being expressed for “Ibra’s sound arguments and foresight”, only 1382 Maldivians believe that I may be able to execute the Presidency. But I am sure, had I NOT nominated myself, and Qayyoom eventually won the Presidency, many would complain that “Ibra also disappeared from the scene at the most critical moment” and it would be all Ibra’s doing that Qayyoom won the Presidency. At least I can retire from politics now and go back to my academic life with dignity, because the people rejected me big time. Only 1381 people (minus 1 for my vote) can ever question me as to “why I left them in the sea”. But I am sure those 1381 people will understand that when the Maldivian people gave me 0.5% of the vote as opposed to the 16% they gave to Hassan Saeed, and Dr. Shaheed who were critical in propping up the regime at its weakest, I really have to accept what the majority of the people are saying very loudly: “Ibra, we have no time for your fancy talk”.

There was one, and only one ballot box result that really hurt me and confused me. The inmates of jails gave votes for Hassan Saeed, who prosecuted them and got them sentenced to jail on long and unfair terms, and did not give me even one vote. I really ask myself, what did I do wrong in trying to protect the rights of incarcerated people? It has forced me to do a lot of soul searching.

I have been constantly accused that I am Qayyoom’s or Gasim’s or Ilyas’s “boy”. I guess that finally those rumours can now be put to rest.

As I plan my life as an academic and a caring husband and father, I have the deep satisfaction that I have been able to play a critical role in rewriting the Constitution of the Maldives, I have spent nearly 25 years of my life in public service and can retire from it gracefully without a blemish on my record, that I have been able to respond to every call that my nation and my people made for my services to the best of my ability; my conscience is clear. I will be able to look squarely in the mirror in my old age and have no regrets or guilt at what I see. I am at peace.

This is not to say that I do not feel sadness about what I foresee for the future of my country and my people. I see rough seas ahead. I sincerely hope that the MDP will be able to steer us through the tough times ahead.

As for the second round, the critical question for us now is, we have to devise a way of preventing Qayyoom from reclaiming 10% of the vote from Qasim’s 15% and Hassan’s 16% while holding together Anni’s 25%.

It is critical for our nation’s future that Qayyoom be defeated in this election. I will give my best shot to see that happen before I retire from active politics.

  1. Ibra,

Thanks for everything you did. I fully support your decision to rest your political service.

I am one person who did vote for you. its a big slap on my face. I know how much more it will hurt you.
Your service will be remembered by atleast 1382 Maldivians.
    Good luck with your future.

  2. I did not expect you to lose the election with such a huge margin. As a loyal fan of you I am deeply saddened. I support your manifesto and the things you embarked on doing - which as you said other candidates have not touched. I believe you as a sincere politician who wants to make a real difference to the Maldives and its people. But I guess majority of Maldivians, especially the older population have not been able to grasp your revolutionaly manifesto action plans - for you and me something so important may not necessarily mean anything to the other person. I guess your thinking should be in touch with that of the population - yours is far ahead!

  3. It felt terrible to see the final election results and see you in that position. But being abroad, I was unable to do anything other then being completely sick of Maldivian politics. To be honest, I was more disappointed that you got the last place than Maumoon being on top. It was utterly disgusting that Umar Naseer could get more votes than you. For me, that was a true indication of the quality of awareness/education that lies within the general Maldivian public. It would truly be a sad day when you retire from Maldives politics. I hope you would reconsider your position and at least be involved in it to some extent. I feel Maldives will be heading to a chaotic stage now and the country would really need you and people like you in the coming times. Although I do realize u deserve some time off, I cant believe that you would be truly happy to leave the country in a dire state.
Thank you for all you have done so far. May allah bless you and your family and give you the determination of sticking around a bit longer. Salaam.

  4. I am a Maldivian student studying abroad and was unable to have my say in this election. However, I did follow Maldivian politics, and looking at the results I was utterly shocked at how narrow-minded majority of the Maldivians are! I guess some Maldivians are afraid of change and the people who want change are unsure of what they want. I really hope you do not give up hope for our beautiful nation. "Change we can, change we shall". You have my utmost respect.

  5. Ibra,

Without doubt you have played a very important part in the reforms. You have sacrificed a lot. I have a lot of respect for you. Why did I not vote for you? Firstly, I did not believe in your VP choice. Secondly the people behind you, or another words you lack a good team. I believe you should be in MND. That is where you belong. Sorry, its just my true feelings.

Best of luck and may God bless you!

  6. As a Maldivian living abroad and not in one of those places abroad where Maldivians were able to vote, I could say that after listening to all the candidates over VOM, had I got the opportunity to vote for this election I would have voted for you. I believe in the polices and authenticity of your character, and I hope you will not feel too disappointed in the fact many Maldivians didn't vote for you (I believe most people in the Maldives just didn't like your policies, which I believe are the best among all the party polices so far) and as for the people whom you have argued for..like the inmates..I would never know why they didn't vote for you...But I wish you luck in your future, and really hope, should you decide to retire from politics, someone will carry on the good work that you have done and you policies and the SLP, and yes I do believe we need an effective opposition to keep checks and balances. And for one I am proud that you did not bow out of the race as many suggested you should have done.

  7. Ibra,
You are one of the best MP the Maldives can ever have. But I prefer the previous team of Ibra with MDP. Anyway I hope you will do your best to rid us of this dictatorship.

  8. It is really a sad day in Maldivian politics. At this critical juncture, it seems the vast majority of Maldivians have outright rejected the values that would have enabled us to emerge as a proud nation that is at ease with itself and the rest of the world.

    I wish you good luck.

  9. Ibra,

Please dont take this in any bad way but I think Ibra must go back to MDP. Thats where you should be. Thats where Ibra shines. Combined with Anni/MDP, Ibra is the Ibra people loves. But yes I understand you have your differences. But these are my feelings. And no you should not retire as long as this dictatorship is here. Please promise that!! We need you!

  11. Ibra,
Common, this really doesnt reflect your true popularity. You know it! Now please continue and do your part to bring down this regime.

  12. Cheer up. We've all heard that good guys finish last. Here's the proof.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ibra,

Its time to change your tone. If you really want to get rid of Gayoom, please tone down your opposition to MDP. I was disappointed to read this is the recent minivan article about your support to MDP. You keep talking against them while at the same time you say you will support them. What exactly does that mean? Is this how we are going to get rid of Gayoom? Why not re-arrange things and prioritise the most imporatnt issue for now? PLEASE!

    ReplyDelete
  14. It’s not that your voice didn’t reach our ears. many of my colleagues and I recognize that you are amongst few, who has a clear and productive insight in to matter we face at present...but many of your supporters have cast their votes for Mr.Nasheed in order to strengthen the strongest opposition.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ibra, please don't take it personally. I did not think an ounce about your policies and principles when I decided not to vote for you. My first priority was to get rid of this regime, because I believe it is the key to breaking the pattern corruption and hypocrisy in this country. I also believe this was the first priority of many others who did not vote for you. So don't take it as anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  16. ibra, you have done alot of good for the nation. i think you can still continue as a MP for Male'.
when i decided to vote...and when i advised people to vote...i said "Vote for Ibra" the next choice is Vote for Anni. but most of them responded saying ibra has a FEMALE running mate. then i said vote for Anni then...i dont think Maldives has seen someone as honest as you and as sincere as you in politics.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I fear maumoon is gonna win this..because many maldivians are still thinking of not voting for Anni...even if they dislike maumoon...those who voted for maumoon will vote for maumoon and if those who voted for opposition didnt vote then its like giving a vote for maumoon...im disspointed in maldivians...if they cant see what we have been here for in day light, i simply dunno what we can show them....and
ibra i want you to go to the homes of people...especially older people and tell them...explain them what will happen if they dont vote for Anni... if Anni is not good, we can throw him out easily..but we might not get another chance to throw out maumoon's family from ruining the country.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Dear Ibra
Though you were one of the best candidate in this election, a lot (and i mean A LOT) of people did not vote you simply because they did not want to "waste" their votes. Apparently your manifesto was the best i would say. Your policies were the best.
I am a big fan of you too. But I did not vote you because i wanted to vote for someone who was "popular" enough to throw Maumoon away in the first place.
I don't doubt what you have done for our country. You have helped this country each and every way we wanted it to be. Maldivians owe you big time for that.
But i want you to know that you did not lose this election. This is not a sign of failure. This is a sign that you don't belong to the "devil's" game. You are hero and you will always be!

  20. Ibra you should thank your good long time friend Anni for all the anti campaign he has being doing regarding you for 4 years. This is the result of it.

You should retire from all politics (From majlish too) to let Maldivians be with these corrupt politicians.

    ReplyDelete
  21. All thanks goes to the Yameen gang & Endherimaage Gang for the anti campaigning they has being doing............

We are so sad to see you leave the political arena like this.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ibra have you heard the final verdict of Maldivian people.

They are saying that they dont want a person like you in the political arena and get lost.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The result shows how 2 face all Maldivians are. Most of Maldivians are munaafigun.

  24. Ibra you are too proud person. It can be seen from your talks. You always bodayvanee amihla ah. Thimahna noonee netho mihaa masahkai kuri meeheh. Thimahna ashoo ehme rangalhah ganoon tha inganee. Have you learn your lesson. Dont ever show your bloody face in the political arena ever again.

  25. Have you tasted the bitterness of Maldivian people. what you see from outside we Maldivian are not from inside. In front of you we will say you are very good. Behind your back we will say you are the most evil person on the face of the earth.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ibraa Maldivian people are saying there is no place in Maldivan politics for a person like you.

Thanks for all the services you have done so far. But get lost.

If you cant hear this you are deaf and dump.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Honest to God, we appreciate what Ibra has done for the cause. But it was always going to be about the funds, lobbyists, endorsements, smear tactics etc etc in this US-styled Presidential System, rather than constituents listening to the principles and policies each candidate had to offer. That is why, I still believe a parliamentary system with controlled campaign spending will do more good for this tiny country of ours. Oh well, we can't cook curry in if ifs can we?

As the results came out and people (family and friends incl) started making fun of Ibra and Umar's vote counts, I always defended the role of smaller parties such as SLP and IDP in a proper democratic system - be it they advocated death penalty for minor traffic offenses (now that was slightly exaggerated)!

    All the best, Ibra!

  30. You are still popular as an MP. But not for the office of president.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Is Ibra finished as a politician?

    * This is not necessarily true. The number of votes he polled is probably not a true indication of his popularity. In this election many voters probably avoided voting for him believing he did not have a winning chance. In a hypothetical one to one context with Hassan Saeed or Qasim, Ibra could spring a surprise.

It is a shame i have to teach you politics. You dont win with truth & honesty in politics. If you ever decide to be in politics in future play it dirty.

All the dirty people are great politicians.

I hope you take my advice.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sad day for the Maldives as its loosing the most sincere and honest politician it has.

In my opinion this just didnt happen to be the right time for you to run for presidency. All the people who wanted to bring about change and supported you had a difficult choice. They had to go for the choice which gave a greater possibility of change rather than the best candidate.

Hope you would still work and contribute to the country and its politics. Specially in the parliament and reforms.

You have done well and so be proud of it. Wish you and your family the best and good health.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I voted for you not only because of the points you put forward in your manifesto, but because I believed in your ability to bring about a change that we desperately need. A change not just for the sake of change, but a change that encompassed provision of basic liberties, a change that
respected the rule of law, a change that encouraged the pursuit of personal happiness through knowledge and education and not with materialism, a change with a vision . I must say I was surprised by the votes and disappointed by what it implied- that even a lot of educated people are in a 'mindset which is hedonistic in nature', and it may be many years before your vision is realized.

  35. In my opinion, here is why you lost.

People know that you are good person with a good argument.

But may be they do not like your whole attitude and negativity.

In other words, the message is good but the qualities people see in the messenger is conflicting with the the message. This creates a suspicion about you.

  36. ibra,

think about ur decison to leave the political arena long and hard, (i'm sure u must have already).

but ponder this; the people opted to vote for either anni or hassan because they thought these guys had a better chance of winning than u. not because they didn't like u as a candidate.

ibra, ur thinking is far ahead of most maldivians. the polls reflect that and is not a true indication of the people who would vote for u given other circumstances.

i pray, no i beg for for u not to leave the political arena. it's not winning an election thats important. but being part of "good" change, no matter how small the share.

ibra, ask not what the people did for you, cause they didn't do much. but ask what you can do for the people, which is more than most politicians could.

    make us believe...

    with respect,
    Jaisham

  41. Dear Ibra,

The result shows that most Maldivians dont think by themselves. They are take the stories told to them. The person who is portrait as a hero by the some media is the person they will all their hopes on. The person who they see on the road shouting with out any reason to be on the street is the Man they are going to bank all their future.

This a sad in Maldivian history to loose a man of your Calibre.

And many people so the succes of you in the Maldivies political arena as a threat to their political future. Those people who saw ths too had been doing anti campaign of you and is working against you.

  64. i was shocked with the outcome. i am sure it was a hard decision for most of the voters like me who wanted a change but didn’t really know who to vote for. i can assure you if i was able to vote my vote (most probably) would have been for you.
but we have to agree that even if you proposed a good manifesto and have a good standing as an mp, you (as far as i can see) did not have the backing of money. money still does talk a lot especially in maldives. and any of the manifestos were not of much use with the elderly population. or with many people out there in the islands. i know an aunt who voted maumoon and her reason was that maumoon is the person educating the people. this shows how unaware she is about the propositions put forward by anni, hassan and ibra. ignorance still prevails. you have a good support base on the online community. but the majority of the voters are made up of offline community who still thinks maumoon is god.
and i am pretty sure that many of your supporters voted for anni or even to hassan just to make sure that maumoon get ousted. everyone knew (or were made to believe) that you did not have as much a chance as hassan or anni. i know one of my sisters who thought your manifesto was good and was going to vote you but in the end voted anni just to say no to maumoon.
don’t lose faith. maldives needs your contribution in the political front. wish you all the best.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Ibra. i admire you in many ways and support you. but i did not vote for you.. these are my reasons.
1.i believe in certain principles and it appeared to me in the beginning that you had that.. but your campaign was not focused. may be you did not have the funds needed or the backing. but even with the little funding you had, your campaign could have been more focused on real issues and more in touch with people in a way ordinary people can understand.when you say you will bring an anti trust law, most of the people dont understand what an anti trust law is and what benefit it will give to them.
2.at the prime time when you should have focused more in promoting your self and your manifesto, instead you went to court with a case, which you yourself would have known from the beginning that you would not win..so i wonder why u did that.. just to prove to yourself that you were standing against something that u believe is being done against the constitutional rights? if so you have wasted a lot of time and energy.and frankly my vote went against you because of that case. because as i had said earlier i believe that, that was the time you should have spent campaigning more and promoting your manifesto. and a person who did not realize the importance of what to do at that crucial point is in my opinion not fit to be the president of this country . at least at this stage .
3.i dont believe that some of the things that you have highlighted in your campaign are the things that are to be highlighted when your are bidding for the president of this country. an example is the preschool education. i agree that its an important issue . but not the thing to be highlighted and focused on a campaign when the country is laden with more important problems and we are in a crisis...but in each of your speech you went on and on about improving preschool education which is not the solution to everything.
4.in your speeches and in your comments you appear very harsh at times and im the person who knows best, at times. thats not a very good image.
finally i would like to say why i think Dr. hassan saeed and shaheed managed to get so much votes is because they have run a good campaign.they may have done things in the past which put doubt about their sincerety but people are forgiving and combined with the kind of attitude they have now and the kind of campaign they ran, people believed in them and believed in their capability .

    ReplyDelete
  66. I personally think that this election came too quick for your time. I have no doubt, you will make a come back. It's time to strengthen your party and many of us, who are watching from a distance, will join you soon. Help is on the way!

  68. Dear supporters of Ibra,

People who are claiming to be MDP and are asking ibra to get lost or that the MDP made Ibra a politician are not real MDP members. This is an organised effort by the likes of Kua Shafiu and Yameen to ensure people hate MDP enough not to vote in the run off so that golhaa can easily win. Beware. Don't fall in to that trap.

  70. No need to get emotional. Politics not a place for emotional people like you. Digest the reality. You are nothing with out us MDP.

Are you trying to get more support by being emotional. If you think you get support by showing these sentiments then you are very wrong. MDp is the hope of Maldives. And when MDP comes to power people will not be interested in politics any more

  73. Dear Ibra,

You need to regroup your party and come back strongly to the Maldives political arena. Dont loose hope. You are the one leader who brought hope to Maldivian people at the most difficult and hopeless time. We are ready to help you in next time.

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, and enough hope to make you happy!

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away!

The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called Confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flats called Jobs. But, if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, insurance called Faith, you will make it to a place called Success.

But I respect that you too have a loving family and you have made a lot of sacrifices for us. But my hope is that you will remain in politics untill you bring out new political leaders who will carry on your works.

  84. you need get pPR people in your campaign strategies. And need to get foreign expertise to strenght your party like what MDP is doing. See how much McGrath has brought to MDP's campaign. You should learn a lesson from this experience. Otherwise there is no difference between you and normal Maldivian thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Ibra,

Anni is successful because of the loyal friends he has arround him to forward and market him. You are missing critical friends like this. I doubt you have any friends like these loyal friends arround Anni.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Now do you realise the importance of PR in a campaign. People dont just vote for a good cause. You need to market what you are saying. Learn from others

    ReplyDelete
  87. You are coward. Just get lost and dont show your face in the Maldives political arena ever again. Maldivians final verdict is that you are not a capable leader to bring change.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Ibra,

The result of the election shows that people of Maldives was afraid because you was saying that you will bring the rule of law to this nation. Still people are used to do things under cut and under the table dealings. You also would get more support if you constantly change what you was saying according to what people like to hear.

    ReplyDelete
  89. anonymous ..what do you mean by strengthening the party? A party without the members to support the party leadership? don't be ridiculous! It's proven that some people just don't become politicians on their own! Ibra was one who was loved and admired just because who was put forward by MDP..people voted for him when he was campaigning on MDP ticket...he did a great job after being elected but people lost faith in him when his loyalty was questionable and when he became too proud of himself and his work! that's the reality, it has nothing to do with his physical disability.

  90. In politics to be successful you need to be a good actor. Go to some acting classes and learn how to be a good politicians. Or else you will loose big time again. You dont know how to give people false hope and attract their attention or be a hero just like in the movies

  91. The moment you leave MDP you are nothing in Maldivian politics. You are now garbage in Maldivian politics. You are like political hahpudu.

    ReplyDelete
  92. One person has commented on your disability. Subhanallah. How can he say that. That is very sad. Ibra please dont listen to what people say like that. oh this is really sad.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I DO UNDERSTAND YOUR SENTIMENTS. BUT I DO NOT THINK THE RESULT OF THIS ELECTION IS A SIGNAL FOR YOU TO LEAVE POLITICS. THE PEOPLE WERE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THROWING THE DICTATOR AWAY AND HENCE THEY VOTED THE PERSON WHOM THEY THOUGHT WOULD POTENTIALLY GET THE MOST VOTES. UNFORTUNATELY YOUR CAMPAIGN WAS NOT ABLE TO GIVE A PERCEPTION TO THE PUBLIC THAT YOU WOULD BE A POTENTIAL CANDIDATE WHO WOULD DEFEAT GAYOOM. SO THEY MOST PEOPLE CHOSE ONE OF THE TOP 3 MOST POPULAR CANDIDATES. RATHER THAN LOOKING FOR MERIT, THEIR PRIORITY WAS ENDING THE DICTATORSHIP. MOST PEOPLE I KNOW DID NOT VOTE YOU NOT BECAUSE OF YOUR POLICIES OR YOUR PAST. BUT THEY DID NOT BEIEVE YOU WOULD GET ENOUGH SUPPORT TO DEFEAT GAYYOOM.

SO PLEASE RECONSIDER YOUR DECISION AND THINK ABOUT SERVING THE PUBLIC FOR MORE TIME TO COME. WE HAVE VERY FEW CAPABLE PEOPLE AND WE NEED THE EXPERIENCE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

    CHEERS.

  94. what I meant by strengthening the party was broadening the party base where by creating foot soldiers who would spread the party messages and implement the strategies. I think SLP also needs to creat tenets and develop institutionally. Also need to establish wings to cater different socio-economic groups.
Our electorate is no different from any other and could be driven by using the good old tactics.

  95. Ibra!
I know ur going thru a v difficult time following the suprising defeat on the election.

BUT its not the true indication of ur popularity...its a fact u, me and everyone knows. Ur enemies may try to picture it big but majority of people know who ur and what u mean to them.

Still Ibra is the , man we all accept, man we trust...for frusrated citizens this election was meant only a mean to get rid of maumoon....rather electing a leader.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Ibra,
Several of above comments r evident tht the future generation (todays youth) are with you... And most importantly majority of the educated minds are believing u.

We need to empower Liberal party. And we are ready to help u. Hope u will reconsider ur thoughts of quiting, coz u have lot to teach us, lot to show us.

And we will nevr quit, hoping same from u.

  98. people writing outrageous comments here on behalf of MDP, please stop attending public blogs. U r damaging the image of the one party who has a good chance of toppling maumoon.

  99. Dear Ibra

Beware of comments from DRP. They will try to divide the opposition right now.

    Thanks.

  100. Do not forget who the real enemy is here. they are the greedy weasels who would do just about anything for money. They do not have any moral values. They will wear a suit and a tie and people thing what comes out of their mouth is true.
Wake up people. get off your ass. Don't just stop and watch and then pass on whatever they say. It is irresponsible and it will certainly destroy our country and destroy our children.
I think Ibra knows it, thats why he supports MDP, even though he has disagreements with Anni.
People, do not open your ears to the likes of Kua Shafiu, mavota shreef, abdhulla yamin, azima shukoor, aneesa ahmed, hoarafushi saleem. They have sold their souls and they are worst filth in this country. Don't open your ears to any more of their filth. How many times does a person have to screw you before you would stop listening to their bullshit. Or just passing it on. Don't pass on the bullshit. Confront them when they lie and help pass on the truth. Rumours are what that have so much damaged some people's carriers, people like Ibra.
My friends, do your bit, dont just be a listener in the sideline. If you voted for Maumoon or support Maumoon, please question yourself why you did that. How a ridiculous notion is 'adhi 5 aharu', when you have screwed in the last 30 years.
Remember some people like Ibra and Anni were struggling for you, to get the rule of law into the system, to get rid of the corruption and the nepotism in the government. They bled themselves for the country.
People of the Maldives, do your part

    ReplyDelete
  101. if ibra collide MDP, i think this whole thing would be over by now.Ibra had the long term plan while ppl are desperate for immediate change of the government.Ibra u belong to MDP, if u stayed u would have done a lot more for the people.you could have competed anni and have wont MPD candidacy. anyways just stick to your plans.be with people.

  102. I have read every comment regarding this post and this comment below is the only one that i couldnt just let go.

"Oh my dear Ibra. You are a disable person. Disable people should be at home while other take of you. No should return to your actual position.

    October 10, 2008 8:45:00 PM MVT"

WHATS MORE POWERFUL? YOU MIND OR YOU LEGS? It takes a disabled to call another a disabled. At this point, I am ashamed to be say that I'm a Maldivian.

  103. thats drp druggies on a high blabbering filth.

we the maldivians more interlligent than what they think

    ReplyDelete
  104. I dont think that is thats drp druggies. That is the general thinking of most people of Maldives. Some people are brave enough to tell it to Ibra's face. Others just keep it in their heart and hide it.

Keeping in their heart and hiding their true sentiments doesnt even help Ibra or any body.

Whether we proud to be or not proud to be Maldivian we should accept the ground realities if we want to excel any further.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Ibra,
I do not believe you should leave the political arena based on the election result.
Your policies are sound and you are respected, however that proved insufficient for an acceptable election result.
As an observer I would say this was due to the style of your campaign rather than a lack of confidence in your ability to lead the country. Other candidates ran, for the lack of a better expression much more "in your face" campaigns, yes and spending millions in the process.
It was the the first multi party election in the country, give voters time to develop the sophistication and wisdom to absorb a more subtle style of campaign. With continued exposure to democracy, they will develop the ability to glean integrity, capability and vision through the distractions of large posters, colourful buttons and saddest of all, money for their vote.
Please do not let the result dishearten you. You have proved yourself over the years, please stay and see the process through. You are an asset the Maldives cannot afford to lose at this critical stage.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Ibra,
I would also like to say your vision and strategy may also have been lost on many Maldivians. A female Vice President may have been too much too soon for a nation fighting to break free of a 30-year dictatorship.
Concepts such as the SLP's must be communicated effectively, again bringing us to the dollars and cents behind the campaigns.
Till there comes a day when campaign budgets are regulated, those with deeper pockets are at an advantage. Either that or a day when voters see through the expensive campaigns and vote on the substance behind the candidate.
