Facing reality.......

A coup d’état is usually brought about by people who are convinced that they cannot acquire power through democratic means and / or those whose vital interests are mightily threatened without power .

Help! I am Falling….into the Void!

The biggest farce of an election was held on the 8th of October in this country, without following any due process, violating the constitution blatantly, nullifying provisions in the law for holding a free and fair election, changing ground rules twice after voting started, in the absence of a proper institutional framework….all because a wayward lawyer declared that if we don’t have a President elected by the 10th of October, there would be a Constitutional Void in the country, and there would be no validity of any President who is elected after that date! A very patriotic lawyer who loves the country and its people very much, I may add.

Of course, this was a ploy to deny the public the opportunity to make an informed decision, to take the incumbent advantage to the fullest level possible, and to deny other candidates the opportunity to campaign properly.

Well, it is the 10th of October now, and we still do not have a President elected. Furthermore, the first round (the main part of the election) was held within an unimaginably short time frame, allowing the Elections Commission to pave the way for fraud on a massive scale, and justify their decisions to do so citing the Void. Even the High Court upheld this tomfoolery! Even so, the Elections Commission violated at least two deadlines in the law and other provisions in the law, and everyone is hunky dory with it.

The funny thing is, the one period (the second round which has to be held WITHIN 21 days) which could have been cut short without violating the constitution has now been taken to the maximum, and in doing so, it has violated the law on presidential elections (this law says a MAXIMUM of 10 days)! And everyone is still hunky dory with it. I don’t hear any patriotic lawyers talking about the Void any more.

If one went by the level of apathy of the people of this country, even if Qayyoom declared that he had decided to cancel the second round of the election and remain as President for another five years without an election (of course, “in the national interest”), everyone would still be hunky dory with it!

Oh! My people! When will you say no to those who are constantly treading and trampling on your rights, that the likes of me paid in blood, pain and sweat to get? Are you telling me that what we fought so hard for and got is not worth enjoying?

  2. On 'Siyaasath' program, Maumoon was asked why he had not groomed a successor. Why groom a successor when you have brainwashed a whole generation into believing whatever he says? Maumoon only has to declare that there was a hadith stating that ' Thiyabaimeehunge therein enme heyokan bodee Maumoonah vote lee meeha eve' and the people would still believe him. We have a generation lost on drugs, enjoying the paradise on earth being high half the time, a generation with no morals, a generation denied proper education, a generation who believes success in life is having 2 mobile phones and a motorcycle. Maumoon has effectively ruined the future of this nation.

  3. Here's whats needed to be done to ensure an opposition win in the second round. The following steps need to be taken.

    1. Change the MDP Coalition to include Hassan Saeed, Gasim and Ibra.

    2. Dr. Waheed resigns as the VP candidate due to "health" reasons.

    3. Hassan Saeed is nominated as the new VP candidate of the coalition.

    4. The coalition conveys the message that Anni would remain a figurehead President as the person who brought democracy n freedom and he would task VP Hassan Saeed with the daily running of the goverment.

Get this strategy across to the MDP Coalition top group!!

  4. Ibra, in my opinion there's one reason which might have played a major part in Maumoon getting the 40%, that is..."Stockholm Syndrome".

    What do you think?

  19. You still want to emberass your family, friends and loved ones in front of the whole country. This the country your children has to grow. Dont you worry about the embrassment they have to go throw their every day life. Think about them. They dont deserve to get it.

  20. Dont you ask your self that 'Do Maldivian realy want change'. Arent they happy about what they get now. By looking into the results of the election that is the message I get. So why dont we leave Maldivians with what they want. Isnt this what they wanted and ask for. We cant bring change unless people of Maldives want to bring change.

  21. ibra,

    i salute thee...

at first it was difficult for me to believe that having multiple candidates in the first round would help topple the regime. now i believe.

i was afraid of the constitutional void. like u said, it didn't happen and the country moves on.

i used to think that we could only bring about "change" using direct action only, as anni used to advocate until a year ago. as i know, one of the reasons that u had to leave MDP was that the party council and anni didn't agree to negotiate and fight in parliament like u did. even anni and the rest realised that and changed their tactics two years later.

needless to say, the MDP is at least two years behind ur line of thought.

there is much to be learnt from u. pls don't leave us.

    -a fervent supporter of MDP-

Ibra don't worry about him. I didn't vote for u either, but I have no problem with you. I trust you and will support you.
For this election, I believe I had to make a strategic decision, and it does not reflect on your record.

  25. we challange drp thugs writing here to nominate a candidate from maumoon and compete with ibra for parliment and see how many votes such a thug gets. or lets have an sms poll to see the of maumoon or anybody nominated candidate for male against ibra.

the thing is ibra is more useful to us in parliment and for presidency he has to wait a bit till we get rid of the dictator.

  26. Maldivians remains as hypocrites forever! never grateful, never appreciate but only have a heart for money and daydreaming. the more U show dreams, the more U are happy and will follow.

Ibra dont worry, and dont waste any sweat on the bills for a change, and never think abt ppl of maldives. They arnt ur ppl anymore. jealousy and hypocricy ate them up. I wish Ibra will resign from Majlis.

  27. I see a lot of hypocritic remarks passed at Ibra in this blog. I say this to those uncivilised person or group " why even bother to read Ibra's blog if you get so upset about it". Its not like a newspaper which just happens to be on the table and you just read it out of no interest. This is an internet blog, you browse it becacuse you wanna read it PURPOSELY. I'm not a hard core fan of Ibra but I still respect his beliefs. Thats what civilised people do. You give rspect to earn respect. A thousand vote or no vote doesnt change the fact that Ibra is a politician who can forsee things before they actually happen and thats A FACT.

  28. Hello, Ibra!
When you announce your thoughts of quitting politics:-
    - I thought for a while about future of our nation. There aren’t rare visionary leaders within us. You are the only such leader I have come across, and we need u to cultivate such leaders.

    - I thought how our parliament will be...we had an era of nothing but blockheads being kept @ a showcase. You are the one who brought a ‘revolution’ to the Maldivian legislative institution.

    - I thought what the future of Liberal Party would be. Among chaos of several parties emerged the Liberal party, which I believed is the only party based on an adequate or rather any political philosophy. It’s just on the way of getting fully established and it will definitely need you.

    - I thought there will be a lot of Young guys like me who look upon you as the role model in the political field. And we all definitely need you to lead us, educate us, and be an excellent example to us.

    - - …..And so on...Etc

(I have heard rumors that, Ibra is an arrogant guy who is so stubborn and don’t listen to anyone….But when I met you a month back in Male’ (hope u remember!), I had seen a Ibra who is very down to earth and who was very enthusiastic in listening this kid expressing his views…as if he was learning something from me. I have seen a Ibra, who instead of dictating me what is better to be done asked me what I feel about resolving issues. I had seen a Ibra who was very humble, focused and very easy to talk with despite being a senior prominent political figure)

Yeah! You have impressed me in various ways...

Hope u will consider your supporters requests before taking a decision. Whatever you decide I will respect it the way I respect you. Thanking you,

    Mohamed Muthuim

  29. Don't let this defeat dishearten you. There are people who want GENUINE change - Change for the better, change that matters... change that will surely return our country from the abyss (or the real void) we're in.

The collective masses don't know what they need - they think they know what they DON'T need... their 'insights' have now lead us to choose between a rock and a hard place... and in the spirit of the new constitution (which the public seems to have whole heartedly rejected by their 'popular' vote) let us pray that enough of the masses will vote in a candidate that proves that 40 is NOT the new 10... no matter how bitter the pill is to swallow.

We need CHANGE - we have ONLY ourselves to blame for the poor choice in change.

Anni, for better or worse, is our ONLY option now for the change.

DON'T quit politics. More of the masses are bound to come crying to the only politician that has been worth a damn - the ONLY politician that has delivered time and again on his obligations, over and ABOVE the call of duty.

We WILL need you. Sooner than they think.

I'm not saying you need to jump back in and start taking blow again - wait and see... and step in when you're needed. I ask this because I see no one else who may do AS effective a job as your potential suggests.

You have my vote. And you will ALWAYS have my vote as long as you stand by your convictions and the beliefs and philosophies of your party.

  30. Dear Ibra,

Where is all those people, whose reights you was defending in the majlish. Why was all those people who you was sacrificing your life. What was you doing with out spending your time with your family and kids for days.Where was all the teachers and tourism employees people to get their rights you didnt had a good night sleep.

I doubt any of these people appreciated what you did for them instead of just telling you this.

Now I can tell you only one thing 'Seelaafa dhadin dhelhiyas thiyah vuren maathaahiru vaane'

Action speaks louader than words. Peoples of the nation actions have spoken a lot.

  31. I am a person who have voted for you on every election that you have come out. For me to vote you now, I dont need to look into any of your policies or running mate. For me you have proven again and again that you will deliver what you say and you have delivered what you have promised so far. That was enough for me to decide to vote for you. I am still shocked about the elction result. I guess the result of the elction shows the party with most people will win most votes as most 2 biggest party DRP & MDP got most votes.

  34. It seems that deception is the key to gaining political success in such underdeveloped nations. But those who work to educate their political minds in a way that there is nothing but their rightful intellect to influence their decision, will prove to be even more successful.

Way to go Ibbe'! Just hang with us......we'll see daylight someday

  35. Ibra,

I think you were very far-sighted in your actions, and I believe your strategy of the opposition not uniting for the first round and the sustained pressure from many quarters was what got us this far. I would like to add my sincere appreciation for your hard work in Majlis and the wisdom you showed in your campaign speeches. Your manifesto was excellent, but your choice of running mate I think was a negative for you. Not that she does not have integrity and uphold the values that you put forth, but just that she was an unknown in politics, was from the same sector as yourself, and coming in at such a late stage, did not have the chance to catch up. Personally, I have been a staunch supporter of Hassan Saeed but there were times when I wavered in your favour during the campaign period. However, your choice of running mate sealed the bargain for me. Also, after much thought, I figured that the dynamic for the country looked better with Hassan and Shaheed in the executive and yourself in Majlis at this juncture. Of course the major assumption there was that you would remain in Majlis. Ibra, as one of your constituents, I sincerely hope you will not leave the political arena just yet. I think your contribution is absolutely essential in Majlis regardless of what happens in the upcoming roundoff. Perhaps a good break with the family would do good for the morale? I wish you all the best in whatever you decide to do.
